Disposable nappies take centuries to break down.

1.3 million trees a year are felled for NZ babies in disposable nappies. Disposable nappies use 3.5 times more energy, 8 times more non-renewable raw materials, 90 times more renewable materials than reusable nappies. 

Disposable nappies can harbour up to 100 different types of virus, including live polio virus from vaccines which leach into ground water at land fills. 

There are many other scary facts about disposable nappies but those three things alone was enough to sway me. Not to mention the cost savings and health benefits for my baby. 

We have partly taken on the philosophy of My Green Nappy. 

Every time you use one Modern Cloth Nappy you save a disposable from going into landfill, you save yourself money, your baby's bum can breathe and is soft and comfortable, and you are reducing your baby's ecological footprint. 

Using Modern Cloth Nappies is super easy and does not need to be a chore. I actually enjoy hanging out my nappies, my daughter gets some fresh air and time to explore the yard while I do so. 

Nappies are part of your baby’s clothing, and they are used very often, so they are excellent value for money. We wear clothes, wash them and hang them on the line all the time. Nappies have an extra step – into the ‘Dry Bucket’ which is no different to putting a disposable in the rubbish. 

Washing, hanging and folding (personally I don't bother with folding) cloth nappies takes on average 10 minutes a day (if that!). It would actually be more like 10 minutes every second day if you had a full set of nappies. 

For a full set of MCN’s you will do approximately an extra 3 loads of washing a week. In the scheme of things this isn’t much more. If you see my washing pile in the lounge you will see that it mainly consists of towels and clothes – not nappies! 

If you decide to use MCN’s only part time or want to save on doing extra loads you can wash them with your towels. Some people like to wash them with their baby clothes rather than their towels. It is personal preference and remember that the purpose of a washing machine is to clean so it is perfectly fine to wash nappies with other items.  The exception would be if baby had a tummy bug, in which case you may like to use Dettol Fresh or Canestan in the rinse cycle of your wash.
