Worried about how to dry your nappies over winter?
My advice, as long as it is not raining hang your nappies outside! Nappies will dry even if it is cold, a breeze or wind is fantastic weather for drying and any sunshine will help to sanitise and bleach.
Make use of covered decks and garages and your hotwater cupboard if you have one. You could also use a drying rack or clothes-horse or even heated (or non-heated) towel rails. Over winter I will often hang them outside in the morning or on the clothes-horse then place them in the hotwater cupboard overnight to finish drying them. I also like to use the clothes-horse during that 'four seasons in one day' spring weather, moving them in and out of the garage during those brief sunny periods.
You can of course make use of the tumble dryer too! Make sure you use the low or cool setting so the PUL is not damaged. Try to avoid tumble drying covers as this does wear them out quicker – hang them in the hot water cupboard or on towel rails instead.
Worried about leaks?
In our experience, you get what you pay for with Modern Cloth Nappies. Cheaper brands don't stand up to washing and often are made from inferior materials. The nappies we sell are quality brands that we have personally used and know they work.
Modern Cloth Nappies do unfortunately leak sometimes but so do disposables. (Check out 'Don't you hate when you get poop on your hand?' on Facebook for some gross examples). The good news is there is normally a reason behind a reusable nappy leaking!
Some reasons are:
Remember that disposable nappies contain crystals and chemicals to soak up the wee.
Modern Cloth Nappies do unfortunately leak sometimes but so do disposables. (Check out 'Don't you hate when you get poop on your hand?' on Facebook for some gross examples). The good news is there is normally a reason behind a reusable nappy leaking!
Some reasons are:
- There is only so much liquid cloth can hold. Your baby may be a heavy wetter, so either you need to change your baby more frequently or add a booster.
- Sometimes MCN’s do get a residue build up which prevents the nappy from doing its job properly. This is easily fixed by soaking your MCN’s in baking soda and vinegar then doing a hot wash (no hotter than 60 degrees, no detergent and be sure to check with the manufacturer before doing this). If you are using nappy rash creams make sure you use a liner (flushable or fleece) to prevent the cream from interfering with the nappy's absorbency.
- Your baby may be reaching the upper size limit of the nappy and therefore out-wetting the absorbency. Putting your baby in the next size up will fix this problem.
- The MCN isn’t fitting your baby properly. When putting on the MCN, make sure there are no gapes around the legs or waist. If you are using a fitted nappy, make sure that the entire nappy is inside the cover - any bits of cloth peeping out will cause moisture to wick onto your baby's clothes.
Remember that disposable nappies contain crystals and chemicals to soak up the wee.
