Prefold nappies are the modern flat nappy and require a separate cover to be completely waterproof. They are very quick to wash and dry and have the cheapest setup costs. You can easily have a large 'stash' of nappies for very little outlay.

Fitted nappies are shaped like a disposable nappy and require a separate cover to be completely waterproof. They are a good 'all-round' nappy for daily use, newborns, nights, heavy wetters, breastfeed babies and long car trips. They can have cheaper setup costs as most only have one or two sizes which fit a wide weight-range.

Pocket nappies are shaped like a disposable nappy and have a built in waterproof layer. The beauty of pockets is that you can customise how much absorbency you need. They are good for daily use, nights and are quick drying so excellent for cooler/wetter areas.

All-in-Ones are the most like a disposable nappy. They don't need a cover and there's no folding (or not much) or stuffing. Most have multiple sizes to give a good fit (great for little babies) and they are easy to use which means Dads, Grandparents, Babysitters, Daycare, etc are more likely to use them as well. Some designs are are trimmer than others.

All-In-Twos are shaped like a disposable nappy and don't need a cover. They have soaker pads that are able to be folded (or snapped out) to aid drying time but they don’t have to be removed before washing. Most Dads, Grandparents, Babysitters, Daycare, etc should be able to easily figure out how to put them together and use them. Some designs are trimmer than others.

One-Size nappies are shaped like a disposable and can either be like a pocket nappy (which requires stuffing) or an all-in-two nappy (which has snap-out soaker pads). They are quick to dry and are good if you have two or more children in nappies at once. One-size nappies have cheaper setup costs.
