Confused about Modern Cloth Nappy jargon?
Here's our list of commonly used terms:
- MCN = Modern Cloth Nappies.
- OSFA or OSFM = One-Size-Fits-All or One-Size-Fits-Most. These kind of nappies are able to be used from birth right through to toilet training. They are often able to be adjusted to suit your baby and to get a good fit.
- AIO = All-In-One. These types of nappies are most like a disposable. They don't require a cover or separate absorbent inserts. Some designs are trimmer than others.
- AI2 = All-In-Two. These nappies are like AIO's but can be taken apart for various reasons.
- SIO = Snap-In-One. These are like an AIO but have soaker pads that are able to be snapped out to aid drying time but they don’t have to be removed before washing.
- Dry Pail or Dry Bucket = The method of storing your nappies until washing. They are often placed into a nappy bucket with a lid. No soaking is required so the bucket is 'dry'.
- Cover or Wrap = A separate waterproof shaped piece of material that is put over nappies to keep clothes dry. The often fasten with Velcro or Aplix. Also see our description of these above under our comparison of the different types of nappies.
- PUL = PolyUrethane Laminate. This is a substance which is applied to material to make it waterproof yet breathable.
- Booster = An extra piece of material used in a nappy to provide more absorbency. It often is shaped and has several layers of material sewn together.
- Bioliner = These liners are easy to use and help with clean-ups, simply pick up the liner (which collects the poo) and flush down the toilet. They are made from 100% biodegradable cellulose fibres.
